We read "Where The Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak, whose illustrations inspired the sensory environment that we would later create in the classroom.
During our Sensory Adventure, 2 classmates would take a trip while blindfolded as 2 other classmates would assist them as "tour guides" during this trip. To prepare for this part of the journey, we took turns leading our classmates around the classroom while blindfolded to build trust with each other.
Then we created "roles" for everyone in the class to play in order for this Sensory Adventure to come to life. We all played our parts to create this living story in the classroom. By doing this, we explored the concepts of Function and Perspective.
Very much as Max did during his journey to "Where The Wild Things Are", our travellers would take an imaginary boat ride while other classmates would shake a large sheet of brown paper to create the sounds of waves in the ocean.
Then, our adventurers would walk through the jungle to get to where the Wild Things would be waiting for them.
To add a little twist to our story, wild butterflies would fly all around our adventurers, allowing them to feel the beating of their wings, which would take us all the way up to the clouds. There the adventurers would reach out and touch the fluffy clouds (cotton balls) right in front of them.
