The sixth graders are working on their masks, so far they have 2-3 layers of papier maché on large balloons.
Our central idea for this unit is "People's cultural background has an impact on their beliefs, values, and actions." So we needed to define what we understand by the word culture.
After determining that, we started reflecting and digging into what we consider to be our own cultures... Students then wrote some statements and did some research to look for images that speak about their culture. These are some of the images they came up with.
We talked about how their characters that they are going to make into masks can be invented by them, they should be original (not copies of these ideas) and understood as a result of their culture and the visuals that affect them.
