Second grade is ready to begin their Mondrian inspired final art piece. Our inquiry took us to Midtown Manhattan during the mid 1940's and we learned about how the beat of Jazz, Boogie-Woogie moves and Broadway's marquee lights inspired the artist's most renowned work: "Broadway Boogie-Woogie."
We read a great story inspired in the life and work of Piet Mondrian. The characters; Coppernickel and Mr. Quickstep, together with their faithful companions Tungsten and Foxtrot, led us through the artist's journey from the Netherlands, to Paris and finally to New York. During the his life, the future and a new way to look at what surrounds us, even the music, was evident. For this unit we reviewed abstraction vs. realism and the use of tools to make geometric compositions.
